How I chose my undergrad institution.
I applied to the place everyone in my family goes. And then I went there.
No other places were ever on my list, I didn’t even have a list. I just blindly did what I was supposed to do.
How I chose the same institution for my undergrad.
I applied to 7 different schools, 6 of which were out of state, and I applied to them, just because they were out of state and sounded good… Got accepted to 5 out of the 7, narrowed it down to 2 (which I didn’t know were hated rivals, because I honestly had no clue where I should go) Interviewed at one, then kind of had to default to the other because of a better scholarship offer.
Best non-decision I ever made.
I found a degree that sounded perfect (Architectural Engineering? I like Buildings! I can do math! Sign me up!) and then discovered it was offered in-state. I applied to exactly one school and filled out exactly one scholarship app.
I applied to 10 schools. Thought it would help narrow it down cause I had no idea where I wanted to go. Got into all 10…So I finally put all the names in a hat and drew one. Guelph won.
Yep, I picked my school out of a hat, literally.
i only applied to 3…the 3 closest that had an astrophysics program, which is what i started off studying. got into all of them, then i decided to ignore the one that gave me a full ride (Drake) because i didn’t wanna live in Iowa. then i decided to ignore the one that sucked (SIU), and that only left Illinois.
Applied to 8 - 4 were all women’s. Got waitlisted at 1 (Wellesley), admitted for the spring semester at 1 (Mt. Holyoke - BULLSHIT I SAY), accepted to 6 (UMass Amherst, Brandeis, Clark, Skidmore, Simmons, and Smith). Chose the “best” (ok… or just best, whatever) of those academically and the one that gave me the most money. Damn good decision that was.
The average at my high school was to apply to 10 schools, so that’s what I did. I applied to schools that had their own schools of journalism, and tended towards big state schools because they were a little cheaper and would have more school spirit. As such, I got in everywhere except for Northwestern (rejected) and Michigan (waitlisted), but almost everyone in my family had gone to Wisconsin, and given that I come back to visit the rest of my extended family here every summer, it was the natural choice. Especially because UMass really isn’t that good, despite the relative generosity of the Abigail Adams scholarship (Sara knows what I’m talking about).
only ever wanted to go to NYU. applied to 10 other schools to appease my parents, but always knew i would never go anywhere else.
